Beginner Hand Lettering Brush Pen Materials

I’ve had lots of requests for suggestions on the best beginner brush pens for hand lettering. In today’s video I’m sharing some of recommendations for the best brush pens for beginner lettering.

Watch the video tutorial or find the products below👇

Crayola Supertips & Crayola Broadtips

I personally prefer the Broadtips over the Supertips but there are varied opinions about this. They are actually both markers, not brush pens. You can achieve a brush look with them by applying more pressure when using them. Make sure to angle your marker correctly when applying the pressure so you don’t ruin your materials.

Broader Brush Pens

My favorite to use are the Ecoline and Winsor & Newton Watercolor brush pens. They both write beautifully and have highly pigmented color. They are super easy to control and great for beginners they hide those shaking up strokes when you’re just starting out.

Medium Markers

The Zig Brushables and Pentel Arts Duo Point Flex Double Ended Brush are ones that aren’t talked about too often – but I really love using these! The Zig Brushables has a really dark color and mimics other expensive brush pens you can purchase, but for a fraction of the price.

Smaller Pens

The Pentel Touch and Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen are my go-to choices for my smaller pens for beginners. I love the Pental Touch pens for so many reasons. They come in great colors (I wish they’d make some pastels though) and you’re able to use them for a long time before needing to replace them. If I had to pick just one pen to start out with as a beginner, this would definitely be it!

I was hesitant to mention the Faber Castell pens. I really love the colored ones I bought in a pack but for some reason the black pen I bought doesn’t perform the same. The packaging and labeling all looks identical but I see some differences. My color pens are great though!
